Computer Repair Services - Questions to Ask Before Hiring
Author : Karina Popa
Computers are almost becoming an integral part of our life. The ever-growing number of computer users certainly requires competent people for repairing these machines. This has already led to a spurt of service providers for the repairs of PCs. Consequently, one comes across many people who claim to be qualified enough to undertake computer repairs.
Unfortunately, unlike plumbing and HVAC repairs, computer repair happens to be among those services which are not yet regulated by any government agency, and thus don't need any official licensing. A lot of people depend on their computers for doing important tasks to keep their business running, and simply replacing the machine isn't a viable proposition. It becomes imperative for you to be extra careful when looking for someone to repair your system. Here are a few questions you should ask a prospective computer technician to confirm that he is qualified to undertake the job:
Do you possess any certificates?
Though there is no official stipulation for working as computer repair technician, there are certain customary certifications which a proficient technician should possess. A+ is the most essential certification. A person qualified for this certification is expected to have a broad knowledge about working with software and hardware as applicable for computers. Likewise, if you want your printer, server or network to be repaired, make sure that the service provider is trained in that particular field.
How long is your practical experience?
Practical experience is the most important for servicing any equipment, and computer servicing is no exception. The greater the experience in servicing computers, the better will it be for you. Find a technician with a minimum experience of five years, though ten would be ideal.
Are you employed by a company or is this just a one man show?
You should know the background of this technician. At times, technicians employed by large companies may fail to deliver the required level of service. One reason could be the lack of experience. Moreover, such technicians do not bear any personal responsibility for the efficient working of your computer. On the other hand, a technician owning a small computer repair business will be keen to do a perfect job, in anticipation of getting repeat business and good references from you.
Are you covered by liability insurance?
In case the technician doesn't have a liability insurance, compensation for any damage done to you, your computer or any of your properties may have to be settled through court, or you may need to pay for technician's blunders from your pocket.
What is the guarantee or warranty of your services?
What if the technician isn't able to fix the issue in totality or the problem reappears soon after it has been rectified? Usually, any good service provider will offer some kind of guarantee or warranty for the work done by them. While it ensures that the technician gives his best to the job at hand, it also gives you peace of mind.
